Tutoring
2016
Hours: 12
During the July holiday break S4 students consider this time as an important study period, as when they come back to school they will be doing their mock exams and then their IGCSE’s. As I did these exams last year and obtained outstanding results I was asked by a current S4 student for tutoring during the holidays. She requested the classes to be focused on History and Science so before starting my tutoring I spent an afternoon of 2 hours planning the layout for the classes for the following two weeks. I set the aim of spending half an hour the day before the class to plan the topics in detail.
My student wanted 4 hours of classes a week. For example for my first class we covered the first 4 topics of biology in depth and then we spent around 15 minutes reviewing our work by me asking her questions, I then gave her a past paper with questions related to the first 4 topics for her to answer in 20 minutes. I chose given her past paper for her to familiarize herself with the exam style and not get nervous when she takes the real exam. This way of tutoring was applied for the rest of the biology hours as well as for physics. Instead of teaching her the following topic which would have been Chemistry my student asked me to focus more on History specifically on Russia depth study. As the method I used for Biology and Physics was successful with my student I decided to teach her in the same way.
What I got from this experience of tutoring was that I developed a new skill of teaching, which helped me develop patience and to be able to explain myself better and more clearly. This will no doubt be an essential skill for my future.
I demonstrated the following CAS Learning Outcomes:
LO 1 - Identify own strengths and develop areas for growth --> This was my first time teaching someone and the student's feedback after the class was a positive one, as well as her results for the IGCSE
LO 2 - Demonstrate that challenges have been undertaken, developing new skills in the process --> I improved my teaching skills from the first class to the last one.
LO 4 - Show commitment to and perseverance in CAS experiences --> I divided the lesson by topics which made it easier for the student to understand the course better.
