First Bimester Hours: 14
Once a week I have a 2 hour intensive Advertising course, an activity that challenges my skills as I have to create and analyse pieces of films. My teacher is a Media Editor, so she inspires me with real advert examples and how they are linked to the audiences. This activity helps me to gain knowledge in how editing affects the audience achieving what any marketing person would want to know to be succesful in their field. Furthermore, I feel that this helps me to have a wider range of information in mind while analysing any piece of film, either in my academic work at school or in my leisure time. In most of the lessons my teacher shows me a piece of advertisement before editing, then we talk about how it could be edited and the effect towards the audience and having a positive impact and understanding. I have also improved through this activity my knowledge in the use of the programme Final Cut for editing the pieces of advert and making them as professional as possible.
I demonstrated the following CAS Learning Outcomes:
LO 2 - Demonstrate that challenges have been undertaken, developing new skills in the process
LO 3 - Demonstrate how to initiate and plan a CAS experience
LO 4 - Show commitment to and perseverance in CAS experiences
Second Bimester Hours: 16
During the second bimester I continued with the advertisment programme, i had started at the beginning of the year with my tutor Giuluana. During this second period I started to learn how to adjust the video's colour scheme to the mood I wanted to portray to my focus group. This is an important feature for the advertisment busineness which is a plus for me to know. What I also learned was how to combine a soundtrack from another clip to the one I was editing and combine a soundtrack with an image. Knowing how to combine soundtracks has helped me to learn how to create a voice-over of the person explaining a product while showing how the product is used.
At the beginning of this second stage I started to struggle in knowing which tool of the colours tool would help me to portray the mood of the advert as there were too many buttons to press and this could make your advert look great or the opposite. With the constant practise of the use of the tools I stopped struggling and now I know how to edit the video's colour scheme without any problem and without any stress at all, I feel a big sense of satisfaction of gaining knowledge of more tools that can help me in the field of editing in the future.
July Break Hours: 6
During the July break I continued attending the Advertisement sessions with Giuliana, we completed a short video focusing on adjusting the colour scheme from a dull environment to a warmer one. What we also did in this course was speeding the video and study the effect that this had with the score and the audience. I found that if we put a score with a quick beat and combine it with an accelerated video the audience mood would be more enthusiastic and the audience would be more engaged with the advert.
Third Bimester Hours: 14
During the third bimester we continued with the task of adjusting the colour scheme of the scenes. These scenes belonged to the movie "The land of the enlightened" and what I did was joined the edited clips together and created a trailer. The trailer needed to introduce the mood and the tone of the overall movie; therefore the colour scheme was crucial for it, as well as the sound design.
To begin creating the trailer I needed to select the most emotive clips as the whole trailer needed to last 2-3 minutes. The method that I used was to select scenes with close-ups and long shots in order for the audience to know the location of the film and the main characters. While doing this I needed to make sure that I wasn’t going to show the whole storyline if not the audience wouldn’t want to see the movie. I needed to select specific scenes in order to engage the audience. I believe that this activity is a successful way to develop my skills in the communication area as it not only helps me to understand what the audience is expecting but also what a trailer must show in order to make the audience want to see the whole movie.
