Service Council
2016
Easter Sale Hours: 1
In the Easter Sale week the Service Council worked responsibly and in an organized way with the products, we needed to sell and with the money that we received because that money is going to be used to raise funds for service projects that are going to occur throughout the year.
I demonstrated the following Learning Outcomes:
LO 1 - Identify own strengths and develop areas for growth---> We needed to be responsible to give the students their respective sunflowers, brownies or Easter eggs
LO 5 - Demonstrate the skills and recognize the benefits of working collaboratively --> The service council divided the tasks intelligently to make the process faster

Markham on Stage Hours: 1
With the Service council we sold the tickets for the Markham On Stage event and in the evening during the break in each performance we sold food products and drinks.
I demonstrated the following Learning Outcomes:
LO 5 - Demonstrate the skills and recognize the benefits of working collaboratively --> The service council and I divided the tasks that we needed to do in the MOS
LO 7 - Recognize and consider the ethics of choices and actions --> All the money collected was givinen to fund the Chincha service project.

CAS Shop (Bimester 2): 7
With the Service council we take turns to sell in the CAS shop during break time. I am in charge of calling the "El Paraiso" distributers to make them deliver the biscuits to Markham College every two weeks. There can only be 4 people in the CAS shop at a time and we need to be quick in giving out the products and handing out change as there is a lot of demand for the products we sell.
I demonstrated the following Learning Outcomes
LO 3 - Demonstrate how to initiate and plan a CAS experience --> Ariana and I were totally responsible for the CAS shop
LO 4 - Show commitment to and perseverance in CAS experiences --> The CAS shop always had a high demand of food by the students, so Ariana and I were always in time in calling the suppliers for the food.
LO 5 - Demonstrate the skills and recognize the benefits of working collaboratively --> We worked together even during the breaks and called the suppliers every 2 weeks

CAS Shop (Bimester 3): 11
As a Service Council member I work in the CASshop during the first and third break. This third bimester Ariana Alva (the girl in the picture with me) and I received more hours of responsibility as the S4 pupils were taking their MOCK examinations (4 weeks) for the IGCSEs and some of these students are also members of the Service Council, so there were less people available to work at the CASshop. Furthermore, some of the 5B pupils, also members of the Service Council, travelled as leaders to Huaraz (1 week) so Ariana and I were left all alone to run the shop responsibly.
We organized ourselves properly during that specific in order to cover the job that 8 people do and go to the CASshop every single day during breaks. Although this was an extremely tiring job, everything ran smoothly and successfully. Ariana was in charge of taking orders and handling money with the students, while I was in charge of the cash machine. This required speed and attention from my part to hand back the correct change and avoid any mistakes. After that intense week things returned to normal as members of 5B came back to school. Throughout the bimester I had to get in touch with the supplier “El Paraiso” three times and make some orders, this was important because it taught me how and when to use correct business language. Overall, this was a fulfilling experience.

Pamplona Alta: 6

As I am member of the service council I was asked if I was interested in taking part of a trip to Pamplona Alta which was about generating awareness of a social cultural reality of Peru which is different to what Markham students are normally used to. This reality is of a very poor district of lima that falls in a low socio-economic stratum. This district was created due to the invasion of people that wanted come/belong to the capital city as they thought that they were going to find a better place to live in and more opportunities for work compared to life in the provinces.
The school wanted the service council to visit Pamplona with the purpose of evaluating the area and analysing its needs, in order to create a plan and decide whether or not the service council would authorize a service project in that area for the following year. The trip consisted in going with the 3 members of the service council and all the exchange students (in order for them to see another reality of Peru) to Pamplona at 7 am on the 24th of August. When we got there we were introduced to an NGO that also wanted to get involved in this project. We went walking around the area for about 2 hours with the exchange students, the head of the Service Council Mr Paz and Mr Kvietok. The purpose of this walk was to observe how people there live and we even went inside a house that was made with the purpose of being a communal dinning hall to sustain 113 families. When the walk finished we went directly to a neighbourhood of 126 families and spoke with the representatives, asking them some questions for our project as well as helping them to construct a communal dinning hall.
We divided our group in 2 in order to not waste time, one group concentrated on holding interviews with the representatives and the other group on painting the walls of the communal dinning hall where we spent four hours before the end of the day.
I believe that this trip was successful as we achieved what we went for, which was getting to know the area and obtaining useful information. This trip helped to decide that indeed we are going to open a project there next year and the goals are already set.
This day enriched my awarness of different types of life in Lima and it also helped me serve as a link for the exchange students so they could socialize a little even if they could not speak the landgaige. I was also trying to explain some things about the area which helped me at the same time increase my knowledge.
I demonstrated the following Learning Outcomes
LO 3 - Demonstrate how to initiate and plan a CAS experience --> As part of the Service Council we came up with the idea of taking the exchange students to Pamplona
LO 4 - Show commitment to and perseverance in CAS experiences --> We completed the painting of a house and walked through the town with the group
LO 5 - Demonstrate the skills and recognize the benefits of working collaboratively ---> The exchange students and the Markham students worked together with the community
